Vein Therapies

It's never attractive to see purple, blue, or red spider veins snaking their way along your legs. These non-essential veins are particularly common on the inner thigh, ankles, and backs of legs. Even in beautiful weather, they make you want to restrict your wardrobe to pants and long skirts. They don't just bother women as they age; some people notice spider veins as early as their teens and twenties.

Causes of Spider Veins in New York

Spider veins, technically called telangiectasias, are tiny veins that run just under the surface of the skin on your legs. This condition is most common in women and often caused by one or more of the following factors:

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes such as pregnancy
  • Occupations that involve prolonged sitting or standing
  • Weight gain
  • Certain medications

Your surgeon will discuss these factors with you when he reviews your medical history at your personal consultation. He will help you decide which treatment will best help you enhance the appearance of your legs.

What to Expect

We perform sclerotherapy in our comfortable on-site medical spa. It is a simple procedure in which your physician injects the spider veins with a solution that irritates the veins and eventually causes them to collapse and fade. The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour. Most patients will need to wear surgical compression stockings for several days to compress the veins and promote healing.

Although the treated veins are eliminated, you will likely develop new ones over time that will need to be treated as well. Many of our patients visit us regularly for touch-ups to keep their legs looking attractive.
