Improvements From (Abdominoplasty) Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck in New York is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures statewide for women and men who visit our practice, as well as patients throughout the country. Our clients choose tummy tucks in our New York offices for many personal reasons, which often include:

  • Removing excess loose skin from the front of the abdomen
  • Tightening stretched or separated abdominal muscles
  • Sculpting the waistline
  • Flattening and smoothing the abdominal profile
  • Balancing an out-of-proportion body type
  • Increasing self-esteem in and out of clothing

If you intend to lose a lot of weight or become pregnant, you should probably postpone your procedure, as many of the improvements you gain will be lost. Our patients often combine a tummy tuck in New York City with other procedures including breast augmentation, breast lift and liposuction for a more comprehensive enhancement called a “mommy makeover.”

What Is The Difference Between A Tummy Tuck And Liposuction?

Liposuction removes localized pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise. It does not involve surgical removal of skin, relocation of the belly button or muscle tightening. For a patient who already has good skin elasticity and good muscle tone, abdominal liposuction can achieve excellent results with minimal scarring. For a patient who wants to address stubborn fat as well as excess skin, stretch marks and separation of the abdominal muscles, abdominoplasty will offer a better result. Dr. Salzberg and Dr. Jacobs can pair liposuction and a tummy tuck to achieve maximum contouring of the abdominal area.

Understanding Your Abdominoplasty Choices

Our NYC patients have two abdominoplasty options: a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. Your surgeon will help you decide which abdominoplasty surgical technique is the best choice for your body and your goals.

A full tummy tuck is the preferred option for patients who need the most correction. It flattens the abdomen above and below the belly button through two incisions, including an extended incision along the lower abdominal “bikini line.” Although this is the more invasive technique and involves a more intense recovery, the full tummy tuck produces the most dramatic results and is the best choice for most of our patients.

A mini-abdominoplasty is less invasive — and consequently achieves a more subtle result — compared to a full tummy tuck. This approach only addresses concerns in the lower portion of the abdomen, below the navel. It is best suited to patients who are slender and do not have separated abdominal muscles but have a “belly pooch” they cannot eliminate with diet and exercise. Mini tummy tuck procedures involve a limited incision and a shorter, more comfortable recovery period. A smaller percentage of patients are good candidates for this technique.

What To Expect From Your Tummy Tuck In New York

At the New York Group for Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty surgery is performed under heavy sedation or general anesthesia in our on-site, outpatient facility. Standard abdominoplasty usually takes two to five hours, while mini-abdominoplasty is complete in about one to two hours. You will need someone to drive you home and help you out for a few days after your procedure.

During a full abdominoplasty, an incision is made low on the abdomen that extends from hip bone to hip bone. A second incision is made around the belly button so it can be repositioned. The surgeon can then tighten slack muscles and remove excess fat and skin. The remaining skin is smoothed over the abdomen and sutured into place. One or more drains may be placed under the skin to prevent fluid from accumulating. In a mini-abdominoplasty, a shorter incision is used and there may be no incision around the navel.

After Your Procedure

When your procedure is complete, you will be discharged home to begin your abdominoplasty recovery. Your abdomen will initially be swollen and feel sore. You may find it difficult to stand up straight for the first week or two after surgery because the skin and muscles of your abdomen have just been tightened. Medication can be used to manage any pain. In spite of your discomfort, your surgeon will instruct you to walk around within the first few days after surgery to encourage blood flow and healing. The tightness will gradually resolve as your recovey continues.

You will be placed in a compression garment after surgery to reduce swelling and stabilize your abdomen. The garment must be worn at all times for the first few weeks following surgery to manage the swelling and encourage a smooth, compact abdominal shape. It should only be taken off temporarily to bathe or to wash the garment. If drains have been placed, they will be removed five to 10 days after surgery.

Your recovery time for your tummy tuck in NYC will depend on the extent of your surgery and the condition you were in before the surgery. If you are physically fit at the time of your procedure, you are able to enjoy a faster recovery time. Some patients can return to light activity, including work, after about two weeks, while others might require three to four weeks away from the workplace.

When abdominoplasty is chosen with clear and realistic expectations, our New York tummy tuck patients can be extremely pleased with their results. Women and men alike enjoy looking better in a variety of more fitted clothing options. You might even be confident enough to show off your leaner, flatter abdomen in a new swimsuit. The possibilities are exciting — let the New York Group for Plastic Surgery take you there!

“Dr. Salzberg is as good as it gets! With his caring manner, he personally guides you through the surgery process from the first consultation to the follow-up (even years later). And the staff at NYGPS is professional, respectful and truly takes the time and attention to care for you."

Frequently Asked Questions

What Will My Abdominoplasty Scar Look Like?

While our surgeons use their considerable expertise to minimize scarring as much as possible, tummy tuck patients will have a scar after their procedure. A full abdominoplasty requires a relatively lengthy incision across the lower abdomen, while a mini tummy tuck involves a shorter incision and therefore a shorter scar. In either case, the incision is placed so that it will be concealed by clothing, including many undergarments and swimsuits. The scar will fade and become less conspicuous with time. The final appearance of your abdominoplasty scar will depend on the amount of skin that is removed, the technique used by your surgeon and your body’s ability to heal.

Can A Tummy Tuck Get Rid Of Stretch Marks?

Many patients who require a tummy tuck are also concerned about stretch marks around their abdomen and hips, and want to know whether the procedure can help. Abdominoplasty does not directly address stretch marks. However, because some abdominal skin is removed, it’s possible that stretch marks in that area of the abdomen may be removed as well. Stretch marks may also shift position as a result of abdominal skin being pulled downward during a tummy tuck. The surgery has no effect on stretch marks outside of the abdomen.

What Potential Abdominoplasty Complications Should I Be Prepared For?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with abdominoplasty. Bleeding, numbness, infection, fluid build-up and unfavorable scarring may occur. Less common risks include blood clots, insufficient blood supply to the tissues or persistent abdominal pain. These risks and others will be discussed with you in detail prior to surgery. Although abdominoplasty is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced board-certified surgeon, you should be fully informed about the procedure before making decisions about what is right for you. Address all questions and concerns directly with your surgeon during your consultation.

How Long Will The Results Of My Tummy Tuck Last?

Provided your weight remains stable, the results of your abdominoplasty will last a very long time. Your skin will continue to age and relax over the years, but the improvements from your procedure will be relatively permanent — your stomach will always look better than it would have without surgery. Pregnancy or weight gain after a tummy tuck can reverse the results of the procedure, so ideally we recommend postponing surgery until you are done having children and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in the years that follow. This is important for achieving and maintaining the most beautiful results from any body contouring procedure.

Am I A Candidate For Abdominoplasty?

Patients who have lost elasticity in their skin or whose muscles have stretched, often due to pregnancy or significant weight loss, are good candidates for abdominoplasty. It’s important to note that abdominoplasty is not a treatment for obesity. You should be at or near your preferred weight before undergoing the procedure. Think of at as the “finishing touch” on your weight loss journey. The ideal candidate for any surgery is in good physical and mental health, does not smoke and has realistic expectations. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your desired results and review your medical history to determine whether a tummy tuck is an appropriate procedure for you.
