Nose surgery or rhinoplasty continues to be one of the top treatments performed in the U.S., according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. More than 145,000 of these procedures were performed in 2014. With the continuing popularity of this surgery, it is no wonder many more men and women are considering nose surgery as a way to enhance their appearance. However, before you schedule this procedure with your plastic surgeon, there are a few facts you need to know.

What Rhinoplasty Can Do for You

Rhinoplasty is a versatile procedure that can address a number of concerns, including:

  • Correcting a nose that is too small or large in proportion to other facial features
  • Straightening a nose that has become crooked due to injury
  • Altering a nose that excessively turns up or down
  • Reducing the size of nostrils or creating symmetry between them
  • Creating a more aesthetically pleasing profile to the nose
  • Repairing functional defects, such as a deviated septum

What Rhinoplasty Won’t Do

While there are many benefits possible with nose surgery, there are also certain things this procedure cannot do. For example, it cannot give you the same nose as your favorite celebrity. While the surgery can improve the appearance of your nose, it will not completely change your look. Rhinoplasty will not change your life or make you into a different person. This procedure is primarily designed to enhance your appearance by addressing specific aesthetic concerns involving the nose.

The Truth about Incisions and Scarring

The technique used for your rhinoplasty will determine whether you will have any visible scarring after the procedure. Nose surgery can be performed as either an open or closed procedure. In an open procedure, an incision is made in the tissue that divides the nostrils underneath the nose. This incision will leave visible scarring, although it will not be readily apparent. A closed rhinoplasty may also be performed on some patients, which means incisions are restricted to inside the nose.

Recovery Facts

Nose surgery does require some recovery time after surgery, although it is often shorter than many patients expect. You should prepare for the fact that you will experience bruising and swelling after your procedure, which will directly impact your ability to see your results. It will take a number of days before dressings are removed and swelling goes down enough for you to get an idea of what your enhanced nose will look like. It could take up to a year before those final results are fully evident.
