Improvements From Breast Reduction In New York

Women turn to breast reduction, technically called “reduction mammaplasty,” for many personal reasons, including:

  • Reducing neck, back, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of heavy breasts.
  • Improving self-confidence about breast size.
  • Decreasing breast size to be in proportion with the body frame.
  • Redirecting nipples that hang down.
  • Relieving chafing and skin irritation caused by sagging breast skin.
  • Balancing the size of asymmetrical breasts.

Many women combine breast reduction in our New York practice with a breast lift or as a part of a mommy makeover for a more complete enhancement. During your consultation, your surgeon will work with you to determine the right combination of procedures to help you achieve your plastic surgery goals. You can see patient results when you review our online before-and-after photos.

Are There Any Special Considerations for Breast Reduction Surgery?

Since breast reduction surgery involves significant changes to your breasts, your surgeon will help you determine if it’s the right decision for you. At your confidential consultation, we give you all the information you need to make an educated decision about your procedure. Ideally, you should:

  • Maintain a healthy and stable weight.
  • Not have any plans for future pregnancies.
  • Be physically-mature with fully-developed breasts.

If you intend to become pregnant or lose weight, your surgeon might encourage you to postpone the breast reduction surgery. Pregnancy or sudden weight loss after the procedure may reverse the results and improvements.

When it comes to breast reduction, many New York women choose this surgery for medical reasons. As such, in some cases, the cost may be covered by medical insurance. Our helpful and knowledgeable office staff will gladly help you determine your insurance coverage options in advance.

Who Are The Best Candidates For Breast Reduction?

The best candidates for a breast reduction procedure are those who are experiencing any of the following:

  • Neck or back pain caused by breast weight
  • Rashes and skin irritation from bra straps
  • Difficulty fitting into a bra or clothes

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a breast reduction automatically lift the breast?

Yes, a breast reduction also includes a breast lift. The surgeon will remove excess breast tissues, tighten the skin, and move your nipples up in the correct area. Consequently, the breast reduction will also make your breast appear perkier and more uplifted. While a breast reduction also includes a lift, the same isn’t true the other way around — a breast lift doesn’t automatically reduce your breast size.

Will my nipples be removed for a breast reduction?

No! There’s a common but completely UNTRUE assumption that a breast reduction involves removing your nipples. While some of the skin around the nipples will be removed and tightened, the nipples will remain firmly attached to your breasts. The nipples will be even more prominent because your breast will be uplifted.

Does a breast reduction produce permanent results?

Once the excess breast tissues are removed, they’re gone forever. However, the remaining breast tissues can expand or contract with fluctuations in weight, hormones, and the gradual aging process can make them droop downwards. As such, breast reduction produces permanent results, but, like all breasts, they’re not immune to changes caused by age, weight fluctuations, and other factors.

How do I prepare for breast reduction?

The first thing to consider is transportation. Since you will be under general anesthesia, and asleep during your procedure, you will be unable to drive yourself home. Although you will be awake when you are released, you’ll still be somewhat under the effects of the anesthesia and too groggy to drive. So arrange for someone to drive you home after your breast reduction.

How do I recover after a breast reduction?

You can expect to be somewhat sore for up to three weeks after your breast reduction procedure. You may experience some stretching or pulling sensations in your breast area for awhile. Pain medication may be needed for a week or two, but you should start feeling better and stronger every day.

In 5 to ten days, your stitches should be able to be removed. As your swelling gradually resolves, the full effects of your breast reduction will gradually become evident, improving in shape over time.

How can I exercise after breast reduction?

In a couple of weeks after your breast reduction, you can start walking to help burn calories. Since this activity will not excessively strain your chest area, it is considered to be the best form of exercise in the first month after a breast reduction procedure.

Your surgeon will let you know when you can begin performing more vigorous physical exercise.

How does breast reduction affect breastfeeding?

Depending upon the technique used for your specific breast reduction procedure, the ability to make milk can be affected. Consult with your surgeon for more information about your specific case.

Will I have decreased sensitivity?

The answer depends upon the specific technique used in your individual procedure. Your surgeon will let you know what to expect after your procedure when you meet with them during your consultation.
