The Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure

Vaginal rejuvenation describes vaginal procedures performed for cosmetic reasons. The most common type of vaginal rejuvenation performed today is labiaplasty. This surgery focuses on the inner and outer lips of the vagina, also known as the labia. In some cases, the labia may protrude too far out of the vagina, requiring surgery to reduce the size. In other cases, the labia may be different sizes and surgery is performed to bring balance and symmetry to the vaginal opening.

In addition to labiaplasty, the following procedures may be included under the vaginal rejuvenation surgery umbrella:

  • Clitoral Hood Reduction – reduces skin over the clitoris for better stimulation
  • Vaginal Tightening (Vaginoplasty) – tightens vaginal wall for higher sexual satisfaction
  • Liposuction – removes small areas of fat from around the vagina for an enhanced appearance

BENEFITS OF LABIAPLASTY

While labiaplasty is primarily performed for cosmetic reasons, patients that have enlarged or asymmetrical labia may also have the following concerns:

  • Painful or unsatisfying intercourse
  • Friction or discomfort in some types of clothing
  • Unable to perform some activities due to discomfort
  • Skin irritation or infection due to friction
  • Labiaplasty can effectively address these concerns, giving patients greater physical comfort and a more satisfying sex life in addition to improved appearance and self-confidence. The results of labiaplasty are long-lasting and there is little or no visible scarring after the procedure.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Labiaplasty is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The specific technique used for the procedure will depend on the unique needs of the patient. Most patients are back to regular activities within a week or two, although intercourse and strenuous exercise will likely be restricted for longer.

New York Vaginal Reconstruction

Vaginal reconstruction is generally recommended for women that have experienced some sort of trauma to the vagina due to childbirth, injury or disease. The primary purpose of vaginal reconstruction is to restore function to the vagina. In some cases, vaginal reconstruction can also be used to treat conditions that could be related to a lax vagina, such as stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

The vaginal walls can stretch and loosen with trauma or the aging process. This can lead to decreased sexual satisfaction, physical discomfort and the conditions listed above. In some cases, the loose vaginal walls can result in the pelvic organs shifting position and dropping into the vaginal area – a condition known as vaginal vault prolapse. When this occurs, women can experience significant pain, painful intercourse and bladder and rectal incontinence.

Reasons For Vaginal Reconstruction

Women may consider vaginal reconstruction if they have any of the following concerns:

  • Bulging from the vagina
  • Pain or pressure during intercourse or other activities
  • Persistent or recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Persistent or recurrent constipation
  • Decreased sexual enjoyment, stimulation
  • Difficulty emptying bladder or bowels
  • Difficulty controlling bladder or bowels

In addition to addressing these concerns, women may find vaginal reconstruction also improves the appearance of the vagina, which may also increase their self-confidence and their emotional health.

About The Procedure

Surgery is used to tighten the walls of the vagina and supporting tissue. The type of procedure used will depend on the specific concerns and physical needs of our New York vaginal reconstruction patients. Vaginal reconstruction is often more invasive than vaginal rejuvenation, since the entire length of the vagina is usually addressed. In some cases, the procedure may be performed laparoscopically, resulting in smaller incisions and less discomfort and downtime.

Like vaginal rejuvenation, vaginal reconstruction surgery can be performed on outpatient basis using local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. In some cases, an overnight stay in the hospital may be recommended. Most patients are back to regular activities within a week or two, although strenuous activity and intercourse will be prohibited for a number of weeks to allow the vagina time to fully heal.

Insurance Coverage For Vaginal Reconstruction

While insurance rarely covers vaginal rejuvenation, vaginal reconstruction may indeed fall under the parameters of medical coverage. In order to qualify for coverage, the patient and her physician will need to document the medical reasons behind the need for surgery, including previous symptoms and related conditions. Our staff can help patients determine insurance eligibility and the steps required to get the coverage they need and are qualified for.

Vaginal surgery is one of the most personal decisions a woman can make today. The highly sensitive nature of the concern makes many women hesitant to speak to a physician and proceed with treatment. However, finding a physician you can trust and speak to freely will make all the difference in your comfort with your decision and with the procedure.
