Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty New York

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the inner and outer vaginal lips. For some women, this area can enlarge and begin to protrude over time, leading to embarrassment and physical discomfort. Labiaplasty restores the genital area to its original appearance by remove excess skin and tissue and creating a smoother contour. The procedure is performed at New York Group for Plastic Surgery, using a variety of techniques that allow us to customize surgery to the unique needs of each of our New York labiaplasty patients.

The vaginal opening consists of two sets of lips; the outer lips, which are referred to as the labia major, or the inner lips known as the labia minor. Either or both sets of lips may become elongated, due to genetics, childbirth or simply the aging process. The problem can occur at nearly any age, but is more common in women in their middle to later years of life to seek this procedure for both cosmetic and medical reasons.

CANDIDATES FOR NEW YORK LABIAPLASTY

Women who have labial tissue protruding outside of the vaginal opening are typically the best candidates for labiaplasty. This procedure may be recommended or requested for the following concerns:

  • Painful intercourse as a result of protruding labia
  • Vaginal lips that show in bathing suits or snug-fitting clothing
  • Discomfort or friction from walking, sitting or other activities
  • Acute embarrassment of one’s appearance during intimacy
  • Frequent skin irritation or infections due to skin friction and hygiene challenges

Labiaplasty is a highly personal decision that should be made between a woman and her plastic surgeon. It is important to choose a surgeon that is experienced in this procedure, because this professional will be better prepared to help you explore your treatment options and determine whether labiaplasty is the right choice for you.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS AFTER NEW YORK LABIAPLASTY?

Patients return home the same day as their procedure in most cases. The area may be swollen and sore for a number of day, but oral pain medication should help ease any discomfort. We will give you a special cushion to make sitting more comfortable and other home care instructions to keep you comfortable and help the area heal faster.

Patients usually take a week off work to heal from this procedure. Exercise like running or biking are generally restricted for 4-6 weeks, while sexual intercourse is prohibited for six weeks to ensure the area heals fully.

BENEFITS FROM NEW YORK LABIAPLASTY

There are a number of potential benefits to gain from a labiaplasty procedure:

  • Improved appearance of the genital area
  • Increased self-confidence, particularly during intimacy
  • Greater comfort and confidence when wearing snug-fitting clothing
  • Ability to perform some activities without discomfort
  • Increased satisfaction and reduced pain during intercourse
  • Reduced skin irritation and infection risk

Labiaplasty may be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures to enhance results. Some of the procedures commonly performed with labiaplasty include:

  • Clitoral hood reduction – trims excess skin covering the clitoris
  • Vaginal rejuvenation – tightens vagina (see Vaginal Rejuvenation page)
  • Liposuction – removes isolated areas of fat from the vaginal opening for a better result
  • Labiaplasty may also be performed during a mommy makeover, which often includes procedures like breast augmentation, a tummy tuck or liposuction.

What To Expect From Your Labiaplasty At Our New York Offices

Labiaplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis, either under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure may be performed using different techniques to address the specific needs of each patient and ensure the best possible outcome. The surgeons at New York Group for Plastic Surgery typically use one of the two following techniques below.

Trim Method (Also Known As The Edge Method)

This is the most common way to perform labiaplasty, accomplished by simply removing the excess skin from the edge of the labia minora. The advantage to this technique is that it tends to result in less post-operative discomfort and a faster recovery time. However, the aesthetic result of this technique is not always the most desirable, which is why we offer a second technique option as well.

Wedge Method

This technique involves removal of a triangular piece of tissue from the labia, which usually includes most of the labia minora and may remove a portion the labia majora as well. This procedure may be recommended for patients with extensive protrusion and while it can require a longer recovery time, may offer the best cosmetic result in some cases. This method can also be performed if there is concern over preserving sensation in the labia, since the trim method can sometime affect vaginal sensation.

The right technique for you will depend on your specific anatomy, whether the lips are symmetrical and other issues you might be experiencing. Our surgeons will discuss your procedure with you prior to surgery so you will know what to expect.

HOW LONG DO LABIAPLASTY RESULTS LAST?

Once you have fully healed from your procedure, you will enjoy a smoother contour of the female genitalia and a better appearance overall. You may notice the sensation in the area actually improves due to the removal of excess skin. Discomfort associated with protruding vaginal lips will also be eliminated, allowing you to wear some types of clothing and participate in some activities you were unable to before your procedure.

Incisions made during labiaplasty are usually well hidden in the natural skin creases, so you will not have to worry about post-operative scarring. Most of our New York labiaplasty patients enjoy permanent results with just a single surgical procedure. If you have another baby after your labiaplasty, you may notice some changes to the labia. However, it is unlikely the changes will be as pronounced as before your procedure.
