Rebuild Your Breast With Tissue From the Abdomen

The SIEA (superficial inferior epigastric artery) flap is a microsurgical breast reconstruction procedure that uses tissue from the lower abdomen to create a breast mound. This technique involves harvesting skin, fat, and blood vessels, which are then carefully transferred to the chest to rebuild the breast. The SIEA flap offers natural and beautiful results for women who have undergone a mastectomy without the need for silicone implants. It also provides a slimming effect on the abdomen, similar to a tummy tuck.

You May Consider SIEA Flap Reconstruction If:

  • You have undergone a mastectomy and are seeking breast reconstruction
  • You prefer a natural breast reconstruction option without implants
  • You have sufficient abdominal tissue for the procedure
  • You want to achieve a slimmer, more toned abdomen
  • You are looking for a solution that reduces the risk of implant complications
  • You have no significant abdominal muscle weakness or conditions affecting the area

Explore Your Options & Visualize the Results

During your consultation, Dr. Jacobs will thoroughly review your medical history, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. He will perform a detailed examination, including assessing your abdominal tissue and blood vessels, which are essential for the SIEA flap procedure. Dr. Jacobs will explain the various breast reconstruction options, including the SIEA flap, and help you understand why this method might be ideal for you based on your body and preferences.

To help you visualize your potential results, Dr. Jacobs will utilize advanced 3D imaging technology with the Vectra XT system. This technology captures ultra-high-resolution images of your body, enabling you to “try on” different outcomes and visualize how your reconstructed breast will appear. Dr. Jacobs will guide you through the entire process, ensuring you fully understand each step of your personalized surgical plan.

Your SIEA Flap Breast Reconstruction Session

Your SIEA flap procedure begins with general anesthesia to ensure you are fully comfortable. Dr. Jacobs will first make an incision in the lower abdomen to access the superficial inferior epigastric artery, along with the underlying fat, skin, and blood vessels. These tissues are carefully separated and prepared for transfer to the chest. The blood vessels are then microsurgically reconnected to the vessels in the chest to ensure proper blood flow and nourishment for the newly transferred tissue.

Once the tissue is successfully transferred, Dr. Jacobs will shape it to form the new breast mound, adjusting the size and contour to match your desired outcome. The incisions in both the abdomen and chest are closed with fine sutures. The entire procedure takes several hours, and after surgery, you will be closely monitored as you begin the healing process. Dr. Jacobs will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure optimal recovery.

The Recovery Process After the SIEA Flap

Following your SIEA flap procedure, you will spend 3-4 days in the hospital for monitoring and initial recovery. It’s normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and soreness around the abdomen and chest areas. Drains may be placed to remove excess fluids, and you may feel some tightness in the abdomen as your body adjusts.

During recovery, it’s important to follow Dr. Jacobs’ instructions closely. You’ll need to wear a compression garment to support the reconstructed breast and help maintain its shape. You should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks. Dr. Jacobs will guide you through simple exercises to promote blood flow and flexibility, helping you regain movement.

In addition to regaining a breast mound, the procedure will provide a slimming effect to your abdomen, similar to a tummy tuck.
