Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is performed in our on-site outpatient facilities, either under heavy sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes between 1 to 3 hours. Someone will need to drive you home and help you out for the first day or two after your surgery.

Surgeons and staff of the New York Group for Plastic Surgery are here to support you after your eyelid surgery. The following instructions and guidelines will help your recovery process:

  • After surgery, your vision may be blurry due to ointment used in the eyes during surgery and from swelling.
  • For the first 24 hours after surgery, use ice on eyes as much as possible. We recommend using a bag of frozen peas if available, as this will conform to the face. This will be both comforting and help to reduce swelling.
  • The sutures around your eyes will be dark in color. Do not be alarmed when you see these. Some of the sutures will be removed at your first post op appointment.
  • Do not do anything that will increase the pressure in your head (lifting or bending), as this will cause the incision sites to bleed.
  • Apply prescribed ophthalmic bacitracin ointment twice a day to incision sites.
