TORN EAR LOBE REPAIR POST-OP RECOVERY EXPECTATIONS

Surgeons and staff of the New York Group for Plastic Surgery are here to support you after your ear lobe repair. The following instructions and guidelines will help your recovery process:

  • Sutures are removed in 1-2 weeks following repair and a thin layer of antibiotic ointment is the only dressing applied in most cases. A little drainage from the wound is to be expected.
  • You may place a Band-Aid over the earlobe when you sleep at night to prevent the sutures from catching on your pillowcase.
  • Typically you will not need antibiotics or pain medication after this procedure but may take Tylenol or Advil if needed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHEN CAN I GET MY EAR RE-PIERCED?
After your repair, you need to wait 12 weeks before re-piercing your ear. We can do this for you in our office or you may go to an outside facility of your choice.

WHEN CAN I WEAR REGULAR EARRINGS?
You should leave the stud used to re-pierce your ear in place for an additional 8-12 weeks. While the stud is in place, we recommend you turn and clean the earrings with peroxide daily. Thus it will be a total of 6 months from the time of repair until you may wear earrings of your choice.
