Dark pigmentation under the eyes can be corrected with a bleaching solution or chemical peel. Your surgeon will help you arrive at the right combination of procedures for you during your personalized consultation.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, technically known as “blepharoplasty,” is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for both women and men who visit our New York practice, especially those in their 40s to 60s. Our patients choose us for the best eyelid surgery NYC has to offer for many personal reasons, which often include:

  • Lifting loose, sagging upper and lower eyelids
  • Correcting under-eye bags
  • Restoring peripheral vision obscured by loose eyelid skin
  • Removing fatty deposits from upper and lower eyelids

In addition to cosmetic eyelid surgery, our surgeons often perform functional eyelid surgery to restore vision obstructed by sagging upper eyelids. Since this procedure can help you see better, your medical insurance provider might cover the costs. You will usually need to be screened by your optometrist to determine the extent to which your eyelids obstruct your vision if you are interested in insurance coverage. Our office staff will be happy to help you determine your provider’s particular requirements.

What Should You Expect From Your Eyelid Surgery at NYGPS?

Day Of The Procedure

Your eyelid surgery is performed – either under heavy sedation or general anesthesia – in our on-site, outpatient facilities. The procedure, when performed alone, usually takes between 1 to 3 hours. This time will increase with additional procedures. Arrange to have someone to drive you home and help you out for the first day or two after your surgery.

Initially, you will need to apply cold compresses to your eye area to minimize bruising and swelling. You will also need to keep your head elevated, including when you are sleeping, for the first few days.

What's The Recovery Process?

Most patients are ready to return to light activity, including work, in about 10 days, but need to wait at least 3 weeks before resuming more strenuous exercise.

When chosen with clear and realistic expectations, our patients are very pleased with their renewed and refreshed look from blepharoplasty in New York City. Although we cannot stop the aging process, our patients are satisfied with their improvements for many years. The New York Group for Plastic Surgery can help you attain a natural, yet younger, look to your eye area.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs

Can I combine eyelid surgery with other surgeries like a brow lift or facelift so I only have the recovery time once?

Certainly! Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures like a brow lift or facelift. This allows patients to address multiple concerns in a single surgical session, thereby undergoing recovery only once. This combination can also provide a more harmonious facial rejuvenation by tackling sagging skin, wrinkles, and other aging signs across different facial areas.

How long do the results of eyelid surgery typically last?

The results of our eyelid surgery in New York City can be long-lasting, with many patients enjoying a refreshed and youthful appearance for up to a decade. However, it’s important to note that blepharoplasty does not stop the aging process, and over time, natural aging may alter the results. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and protecting your skin from sun exposure can help extend the longevity of the results. Additionally, some patients choose to have revision surgery as they age.

Will there be visible scarring after eyelid surgery?

The incisions made during eyelid surgery are usually well-concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid, minimizing visible scarring. The incisions for an upper eyelid surgery are placed within the natural creases or folds of the upper eyelids, and the incisions for lower eyelid surgery are made either inside the lower eyelid or just below the lower lash line.

In both cases, the scars are barely visible. The appearance of scars will gradually fade over time, becoming even less noticeable. Please follow your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions, including keeping the area clean, moisturizing, and protecting it from sun exposure to promote optimal scar healing and achieve the best aesthetic outcome.

How long should I wait after eyelid surgery before wearing makeup or using skincare products?

After your blepharoplasty in New York City, it’s crucial to allow your incisions to heal properly to avoid infection or irritation. Typically, patients are advised to wait at least one to two weeks before applying makeup or using non-prescribed skincare products on the surgical area. When you are given the green light to resume using makeup and skincare products, start with gentle, hypoallergenic products to minimize irritation. Avoid products that may sting or irritate the eyes.

Will my eyelids feel tight or unnatural after the surgery?

It’s common for patients to experience a sensation of tightness in their eyelids following surgery. This feeling is a result of swelling and the body’s natural healing process. As the swelling subsides, this tightness typically lessens. Over time, as the healing process concludes, the eyelids should feel normal, and the tightness should resolve. Please follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to aid in a comfortable recovery.
