What is SIEA Flap surgery?

The SIEA Flap procedure stands for “Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery”. This is a breast reconstruction procedure that makes use of the blood vessels, fat and skin from the lower abdomen, to build the breast mound. This is a suitable technique when you have recovered from breast cancer and undergo a mastectomy.

At New York Group for Plastic Surgery, we are renowned for our expertise in microsurgical procedures. We use state-of-the-art technology and follow benchmarked SIEA surgical processes to reconstruct your breast and restore your beautiful, shapely form.

Why undergo the SIEA Flap surgery?

The SIEA Flap surgery is a procedure that can help you:

  • Regain your breast naturally
  • Feel confident and beautiful about your appearance
  • Prevent the need for silicone implants
  • Reduce the risk of implant rejection
  • Reduce your vulnerability to a hernia

In addition to these benefits, the SIEA flap surgery also helps you gain a slimming effect. Since the fat, skin and blood vessels are sourced from your abdominal region, your tummy region will appear tighter and more toned. The SIEA flap procedure does not affect abdominal muscle tone and you’ll get a result that resembles that of a tummy tuck.

Who is eligible for the SIEA Flap procedure?

The SIEA Flap surgery is a safe procedure. However, not every patient is eligible for this surgery. The SIEA may not be the right option for you if:

You are very thin and do not have sufficient fat needed for breast reconstruction.
You do not have (or have fewer) blood vessels in the abdomen, which are essential for healthy breast functioning.
Your blood vessels are too small and cannot support the needs of breast reconstruction.

Our plastic surgeons at New York Group for Plastic Surgery will be able to evaluate your medical health and advise you about the next course of action. If SIEA is not ideal for you, don’t worry. We have other procedures that can help you achieve the results you want.

Recovering after the surgery

The SIEA flap surgery takes place at our New York Group for Plastic Surgery facility. You will need to stay for 3-4 days after surgery for observation. It is best if you arrange for transport after the surgery. Right after the surgery, you may experience soreness and minor discomfort in the surgical sites.

But, as your scars heal, this pain and discomfort will be reduced. Drains may be used to remove any excess body fluids. You will also be advised to wear a chest compression for a few weeks, to ensure the reconstructed breast shape remains as it should.

We will show you a few simple exercises that you can do post-discharge to ensure blood flow and flexibility to your chest muscles. We will also advise you on how you can take care of your abdominal scar, so it heals fully and is barely visible.
